Sustained Not Consumed
“I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.” -
Lamentations 3:20-22
Even if you’ve never opened this or any other portion of scripture before, from the name lamentations, one quickly understands that the author and the people being written about were going through it.
They had suffered a great deal of loss. And they were downcast. So many of us have suffered and are suffering loss. The loss of a loved one, our health, our finances, a relationship, a dream.
It’s natural and appropriate for us to be downcast in these times. It’s in these times that we like the author remember the love that is all around us, God’s love, God’s love experienced through family and friends, love experienced through the kindness and compassion of strangers.
When we place our hope in the love that is all around us, we are sustained not consumed.
