מצינו שבראש השנה לאילנות מדגישים הקשר להאדם, מיוסד עמ"ש "כי האדם – עץ השדה" ש"תלמיד-חכם" נמשל לעץ השדה, ו"מאי פירות – מצוות", ועד"ז בפסוק "הבאים ישרש יעקב יציץ ופרח ישראל וגו'" – שע"י הגלות מתחדש ענין הצמיחה וכו'. ולכאו', אף שמעלת מין הצומח גדולה יותר ממין הדומם, אבל אי"ז מגיע למעלת מין החי ומין המדבר'?! והביאור: ישנה מעלה בצומח שאינו בחי ומדבר, והיא – שהוא חייב להיות מקושר כל הזמן עם מקורו, האדמה, ודוקא עי"ז ה"ה צומח ועושה פירות וכו'. ובעבודה: העבודה בעוה"ז התחתון היא עבודת המדות ("ענין החסידות הוא לשנות טבע מדותיו", וזהו גם עבודת האבות) – בחי' הצומח. ובפשטות – הבטחון והנתינת-כח ליהודי שיצליח בעבודתו הוא כאשר יודע ש"האדם עץ השדה", שהוא מחובר תמיד בשרשיו – מ"ת, עד להאבות, וזהו מה שנותן לו את הכח להיות "יציץ ופרח ישראל וגו'".

Though the 15^th of Shevat is the Rosh Hashanah for trees, our emphasis from the day is on mankind, in accordance with the verse, “For man is a tree of the field” – a Torah scholar is compared to a tree, and “What are fruits – mitzvos.” Similarly, the verse, “Those who come, whom Yaakov caused to take root, Israel flourished and blossomed and they filled the face of the world with fruitage” teaches us the growth that results from exile etc. Seemingly, plant life can’t compare to the quality of animal life and human beings? Nevertheless, we highlight the quality of plant life because plants has an advantage that even animals and humans don’t have: a plant is constantly connected to its source, the ground. That’s the only way it can grow and produce fruits etc. In terms of Divine service: our service in this physical world is that of the emotive attributes (“the goal of Chassidus is to change the nature of one’s emotive attributes,” and this is also the service of the Patriarchs) – the level of plant life. Simply put, the guarantee for success in one’s Divine service is when he knows that “man is a tree of the field,” i.e., constantly connected to his roots – from the giving of the Torah, and all the way back to the Patriarchs. That is what gives a Jew the strength to “flourish and blossom” etc.
