Police in Thailand are conducting an investigation into a case they believe involves the country's first female serial killer. The suspect, 36-year-old Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn, was arrested on April 25 following the death of a 32-year-old friend, Siriporn Khanwong. The scope of the investigation has grown, with as many as 14 deaths and one possible poisoning survivor now under examination. Cyanide is suspected to be the method of murder, with financial gain believed to be the motive.
Background of suspect
Sararat, often referred to as "Am", is an alumnus of Nakhon Pathom Rajabhat University, located to the west of Bangkok. Her university lecturers remember her as unremarkable in both appearance and behavior. She completed her degree in public relations in 2009.
Previously, Sararat was married to a police officer, Pol Lt-Colonel Witoon Rangsiwuthaporn, with their marriage ending last year. They have two children together.
According to the residents of the Kanchanaburi police flats, where the couple once resided, Sararat was known to be reserved, typically interacting only with affluent police families.
Sararat is suspected of being involved in the deaths of at least two policewomen.
In the latter part of the previous year, she entered into a de facto marriage with Suttisak Poonkwan. Suttisak passed away on March 12, and he is currently considered a possible victim of poisoning by the authorities.
At the time she was apprehended, Sararat was four months pregnant.
