שמו של אדמו"ר הזקן "שניאור" מורה שאדה"ז כלל ביחד את שתי האורות - האור דנגלה דתורה והאור דנסתר דתורה ("שני אור" במלה אחת). וזהו גם מה שהוא תובע מחסידים, שצ"ל הלימוד בנסתר דתורה, אבל לא פחות מזה צ"ל גם הלימוד בנגלה דתורה, וזהו הסימן שהוא נותן לנו כחות לזה, ואי ניצולם של הכחות ה"ז ר"ל כמו "החובל באחרים" ש"חייב", ובפרט שה"אחרים" הוא נשיא בישראל!; הסדר אצל אדה"ז בקירוב יהודים לחסידות הי' באופן כזה, שקודם אמר בפניהם ענין בנגלה דתורה שהתפעלו מזה ובכך שינה את המהות שלהם וקירב אותם לחסידות, וזוהי גם ההוראה אלינו, שהכלי להפצת המעיינות חוצה הוא הידיעה בנגלה דתורה. ואם רוצים להשתמש בביטוי של אדמו"ר מהריי"צ שהרביים עשה אותנו ל"שיסערס" ("יורים"), הרי ה"קויל" ("קליעה") שבו "יורים" הוא "נגלה", שעי"ז מקרבים יהודים לחסידות.

The Alter Rebbe’s name, Shneur (“Shnei Or” combined into one word) indicates that the Alter Rebbe combined both lights – the light of Nigleh and the light of Nistar – as one. This is also what the Alter Rebbe demands from Chassidim: to study Chassidus, but also to study Nigleh in no less measure. Since this is what is demanded of us, that means we are given the abilities necessary to do it, and failure to utilize those abilities constitutes “injury to someone else,” in which case one is “liable” – and especially considering that the “someone else” in this case is the Nasi Hador! When the Alter Rebbe arrived in a city, he would first engage the local Jews in Nigleh, and after he impressed them that way, he would engage them in Chassidus, drawing them near and turning them around completely. This is also a lesson for us: the means for spreading the wellsprings to the outside is a vast knowledge of Nigleh. To use the expression of my father-in-law, the Rebbe: the Rebbe’im turned us into “shooters,” and the “bullet” we shoot is Nigleh – through which we draw Jews near to Chassidus.
