מ"ראש" של קהילה, של כמה אנשים או אפי' של משפחתו בלבד, נדרש את האמור – שהכל יהי' מתוך חיות ושמחה ולהשפיע כך גם על הסביבה – לפי ערך כחותיו, שהרי "עשיר שהביא קרבן עני לא יצא" י"ח כלל. ובפרט אם רוצה להתמנות ל"ראש" גדול יותר הנה עליו להראות דוגמא-חי' איך מתנהג עכשיו כ"ראש". וכמסופר במדרש בנוגע למשה רבינו ודוד המלך שנבחרו להיות רועי ישראל בגלל התנהגותם בתפקידם כ"רועה צאן" שנים לפנ"ז. ולדוגמא ראש ישיבה של כתה קטנה יותר שרוצה להיות ר"י בכתה גדולה יותר, צריך להראות שממלא את תפקידו בדרגתו עתה "כדבעי למיעבד" ודואג לטובת התלמידים בכתה זו מתאים למעמדם ומצבם, "עפ"י דרכו", וכו'. ובדאי שנזהר לא לצער יהודי באמירת מוסר וכו' אלא עושה הכל מתוך חיות ושמחה, ובקו הטוב. וממנו – "ראש" על כו"כ, ועוד מתכונן להתעלות בזה גופא – שדורשים יותר, נותנים לו יותר כחות.

A leader of a community, or of a few, or even of his own family – must do everything with vitality and joy and similarly influence his entire surrounding in accordance with his capabilities, because “A wealthy person who brings a poor person’s offering has not fulfilled his obligation” at all. Especially if one wants to be appointed to a higher position of leadership – he must show a living example of how he serves as a “head” currently. As the Midrash says about Moshe Rabbeinu and Dovid Hamelech, who were chosen as shepherds of the Jewish people because of how their conduct in earlier years as shepherds of sheep. For example: a rosh yeshiva of a small class who wants to be appointed to a larger class must demonstrate that he fulfills his current role to the utmost extent, and show that he cares for his students’ well-being and engages with them on their level etc. And he must certainly be careful not to cause anyone pain by giving rebuke etc.; rather, he must do everything with vitality and joy and an approach of positivity. As one advances, more is expected of him – and he is given greater resources for it.
