Synopsis

A) Shelishi of Parashas Vayechi describes how Yosef wanted Yaakov to place his right hand on the head of Menashe, “for this is the firstborn,” but Yaakov left his right hand on the head of Ephraim, because, “his younger brother shall be greater than he.” Klei Yakar explains that “Yosef thought it was more appropriate to bestow the greater blessing on the firstborn son because he receives a double inheritance…and Yaakov replied that Hashem chooses those who are small, and anyone who has a trait of smallness is elevated more by Hashem” – emphasizing the virtue of humility and lowliness. In a similar vein, the end of this portion states, “which I took from the Emori by my sword and by my bow.” Onkelos renders this “bitzlosi uva’usi – with my prayer and my plea – the service of tefillah, where the law is, “One should not stand to pray except with a solemn mindset” – humility. B) “Which I took from the hand of the Emori (‘the seven nations’) with my sword and with my bow” represents the conquest of the seven emotive attributes through tefillah. Here, there is a special advantage to the “bow” (which can hit even a distant enemy) – it is specifically through “my plea” (which connotes an even greater degree of supplication than “my prayer”) that the hidden elements of kelipah are destroyed.
