Well done on making it this far into the year. Haha! In today's news, an expedition to an abandoned forest and a couple drive from the North to the South Pole in an electric car. And in today's tasty tidbit: the tallest mountain in the solar system (太陽系中最高的山). Stay tuned for those stories, coming up next. ________________________________ 救援任務拯救受傷的勘測人員 Rescue Mission Saves Injured Surveyors Have you ever been on an expedition (探險) before? No, I haven't. What about you? I have been on many expeditions. My last one was to Family Mart to buy a sweet potato. I don't think that counts as an expedition, Jake… Does it not? No, no! An expedition is a journey undertaken for exploration, research or adventure. Expeditions are typically organized and planned. They normally involve challenging or dangerous environments, such as mountains, jungles, snowy wastes, or remote places. Ahh! So you have to go to a dangerous or faraway place, like the Arctic? And you have to go there to explore, to conduct research or for adventure? Yes. Therefore popping down to Family Mart doesn't count. Right then. Well, now that I know what an expedition is, I do have a news story to share, something that happened recently in Taiwan. I'm sure you can't wait to hear it. Recently in Tainan, a team of eight surveyors (勘測人員) went on an expedition to an abandoned forest in the mountains. An abandoned forest? That sounds spooky. You bet. So what were they doing there exactly? They went there to survey the forest, which had been abandoned for 30 years. In this case, surveying means to examine a piece of land and collect data about it. They were also inspecting a disused helipad (直升機停機坪) to see if it could still be used. That doesn't sound too bad. However, they soon found out they bit off more than they could chew. 不過，他們很快就發現他們承擔超過自己所能勝任的任務。 One of the eight surveyors fell and injured themselves. Two others suffered from altitude sickness (高山症) and hypothermia (失溫症). And to make matters worse, adverse weather conditions, such as dense fog and heavy rain, made rescue efforts more difficult. They were stranded (滯留的) in that abandoned, remote forest for three days. Oh, my! Imagine being stranded for three days. That must have been terrifying. Thankfully, after the weather conditions cleared, a rescue helicopter airlifted them to hospital. They have all received medical treatment, and have no issues. Note to self: Stick to safe walks, and avoid abandoned forests! ________________________________ 一對夫妻從地磁北極到南極駕駛電動車 Husband and Wife Team Drive from Magnetic North Pole to South Pole in Electric Car Have you ever wondered about the ends of the Earth, where it's super cold? Well, get ready for a frosty expedition, as we talk about the North and South Poles! The North Pole is way up in the Arctic (北極地區), surrounded by icy waters. The South Pole is in Antarctica (南北州), the fifth-largest continent. Now, imagine driving from one pole to the other in an electric car. That's what husband-and-wife team Chris and Julie Ramsey did! It's a tale of freezing temperatures, polar bears, and making history. They set off in March from the Magnetic North Pole (地磁北極) in Canada, driving their Nissan Ariya electric car. They then drove through the United States, and then through South America.
