מסופר על הצ"צ שפעם בילדותו נכנס לאדמו"ר הזקן ושאל אותו עמ"ש [בראשון דפ' ויחי] "ויחי יעקב בארץ מצרים"‏ – ‏איך יכול יעקב אבינו "לחיות" בארץ מצרים?! וענה לו אדמו"ר הזקן, שלפני שיעקב הגיע למצרים שלח את יהודה "להורות לפניו גושנה"‏ – ‏להקים בית ללמוד תורה וכו', וע"י הכנה כזו יכול להיות גם שם "ויחי יעקב". וההוראה: כאשר יהודי מתבונן בגודל הירידה של הנשמה למטה בגוף, ושנמצא ב"מיצרים וגבולים" של "ארץ מצרים", גלות, הרי הוא יכול לבוא לידי עצבות ח"ו, הנה עליו לדעת שגם במעמד ומצב הזה יכול הוא להיות בשמחה, "ויחי יעקב", ע"י לימוד התורה בכוונה של "גושנה"‏ – ‏שהוא מתקרב עי"ז להקב"ה.

It is told that when the Tzemach Tzedek was a child, he asked the Alter Rebbe question on the pasuk “And Yaakov lived in the land of Egypt”: how was Yaakov able to “live” in Egypt? The Alter Rebbe replied that before Yaakov came to Egypt “he sent Yehudah ahead of him to Joseph, to direct him to Goshen” – to establish a house for Torah study etc.; with this preparation Yaakov was able to “live” even in Egypt. The lesson is: when a Jew thinks about how far his soul has descended, into the “constraints and limitations” of “Egypt”, into exile, he may feel sad etc., but he must know that he can be happy even in such circumstances – “and Yaakov lived” – by studying Torah in a manner of “to Goshen” – to become closer to Hashem.
