I first met Meredith through networking, a practice I cannot emphasize enough for its role in business growth. Meredith works at Thryv, a software company that has evolved from the Nynex Yellow Pages in the 90s to a top-rated company with operations in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. It's been fascinating to witness the transformation of Thrive and Meredith's journey with the company.
The Evolution of Thryv and Meredith's Journey
Meredith shared that while Thryv 's philosophy of helping small businesses has remained constant, the tools and processes have become more complex. This evolution mirrors the journey of many entrepreneurs, which can often feel like a lonely road without a clear path. However, Meredith's work at Thryv is creating a direct path for people to advertise and put themselves out there.
The Power of Networking: BNI (Business Networking International)
We delved into the topic of networking, specifically BNI. Meredith shared her experience with BNI, which she discovered in August 2021.
We discussed the importance of having a presence beyond social media.
We also touched on the topic of financing for coaches and consultants. Thrive partners with WiseTech to provide financing options, allowing clients to get paid upfront while Thrive handles the collection process. This can give businesses a competitive advantage over others that don't provide this option.
Understanding your business's numbers and cash flow is crucial. I mentioned the "ostrich effect," where business owners avoid looking at their financials, which can be detrimental. Using software like v can help businesses track their cash flow and make informed decisions.
Meredith admitted that she often works long hours but prioritizes a daily workout to counterbalance her sedentary work on Zoom.
The Importance of Networking and Communication
We agreed that networking and communicating what you do is more important than having a website in the early stages of starting a business. A website alone is not the answer and should be part of a larger marketing strategy.

Meredith takes the time to analyze the needs of potential clients and determine if Thrive's products or services are a good fit. She provides her contact information through her digital business card, allowing people to schedule a meeting using Thrive's software scheduler.
