סיבת הצום בעשרה בטבת היא ש"סמך מלך בבל אל ירושלים", דהיינו שיש להלחם ולבטל אפי' "סמיכות" מלך בבל לירושלים (גם אם החומה עדיין לא נפגמה), ואם לא‏ – ‏זה יכול להביא לתוצאות חמורות ר"ל. וההוראה: "ירושלים" נק' על שם "שלימות היראה"‏ – ‏קדושה, ו"בבל" קאי על עניני עוה"ז שהם באופן של "בלבול" שלא יודעים להבחין בין עניני קדושה ועניני חול וכו', ועל היהודי לדעת ש"ירושלים" ו"בבל" הם שני ענינים נפרדים ואסור לתת להיצה"ר לעשות ביניהם איזה "סמיכות". ובעבודה היום יומית: התחלת היום היא עם אמירת "מודה אני", תפלה ולימוד התורה שלאח"ז‏ – ‏"ירושלים", אבל אח"כ כשצריך להתעסק בעניני העולם לצורך פרנסה וכו'‏ – ‏"בבל", עליו לדעת שבעצם אין לו שייכות לזה, וצריך לעמוד ב"ריחוק מקום" מזה ולהתעסק בזה "בלא לב ולב", ועי"ז ה"ה מעלה את עניני העולם לקדושה.

The lesson is: Yerushalayim connotes holiness – Yiras Shalem (“complete awe”), while Bavel represents worldly matters, where we can’t see what’s holy and what’s mundane etc. A Jew must know that Yerushalayim and Bavel are separate, and we must not allow any “closeness” between them. In terms of one’s daily service: at the beginning of the day, one says Modeh Ani, davens, and studies Torah – Yerushalayim. But afterwards, when he engages in worldly matters – Bavel – he must know that in essence he has no connection to worldly matters, and he must remain far away from it, without investing his heart in it. In this way, he transforms Bavel into holiness.
