Description

Synopsis
Being that fast days are days of teshuvah, there was a custom of old to gather on fast days after Mincha to hear “words of reproof.” As for why this isn’t done anymore in most places – we can judge favorably and explain that there are no greater “words of reproof” than the reading of the Haftorah during Mincha of the fast day. Nevertheless, since that still doesn’t compare to the feeling of awakening that comes from hearing “words of reproof” in the plain sense – we should observe this custom after Mincha tomorrow in some sense, whether by speaking “words of reproof”, at least in brief, or by thinking about words or reproof, and “Hashem joins a good thought to an action”. And then we’ll have the fulfillment of the promise that “All these fast days will be nullified in the future in the days of Moshiach, and moreover, they will be transformed to festivals and days of gladness and joy”. And the Rambam includes this in Yad Hachazakah, a sefer of Halachos (a) to emphasize that fast days were instituted at the outset in order to be abolished in the future, so their nullification doesn’t contradict the principle that Torah and mitzvos cannot be nullified, and (b) because the very fact that the fast days will not only be nullified, but transformed to festivals – this brings a person to do teshuvah out of love, which cause his “intentional sins to become like merits for him”.
