Episode Details

Supernatural Season 5, Episode 12, Swap Meat recap 🤓 (Meat, not meet. We love a pun.) Sam swaps bodies with a nerdy 17-year-old named Gary (Colton James), and Jared Padalecki gets to play a teenager living his best life in Sam's body, while the real Sam is stuck at Gary's house with his very concerned parents, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. Freaky Friday, Winchester style.

The boys are in Housatonic, Massachusetts, hunting a poltergeist tied to a 1720s witch legend, when Gary and his friends, who have been dabbling in a very bad book of dark magic, pull off a body swap. Gary-in-Sam hits on a blonde at a bar (I know, right?), orders a bacon cheeseburger and cheese fries, and has the time of his life. Real Sam, meanwhile, takes WAY too long to realize he's not in his own body. And Gary's friends have bigger plans that involve a demon.

Episode Highlights:

• Sam getting picked up by the cops and taken home to Gary's parents
• Jared Padalecki in clothes clearly meant for a teenager
• Gary-in-Sam eating a bacon cheeseburger and cheese fries (Sam would NEVER)
• Dean getting knocked out twice in one episode
• A young Sarah Drew nailing the demon role
• Gary, the devil, and a very bad deal on the table
• Fun fact: the body swap was originally written for Sam and Dean (we think Gary was funnier)
• Our one gripe: why not let Jared play Gary the whole time?

In the lore segment, we dig into the science of body swapping: how researchers use virtual reality to make people feel like they're in someone else's body, and how the experience could help build empathy and help people understand themselves better.

Sam (in Gary's bedroom): "Smart kid." (finds the Star Wars stash) "Virgin." (finds the porn stash) "Frustrated virgin."

Your turn, hunters: Whose body would YOU want to swap into for a day? And settle this for us: does YOUR basement have a dirt floor? (Texans need to know.)
