בא' ממכתביו אודות הטענות נגד החסידים, כותב אדה"ז "נתתי שמחה בלבי מעת שמעתי שהם (המנגדים) מגמגמים בשקרים גדולים וכו'". אף שטענות כאלו אין להם שום יסוד כלל, אבל מכיון ש"אין אדם נחשד בדבר אא"כ וכו'" צ"ל שיש להם איזה יסוד [ולדוגמת הטענה נגד רבינו הזקן שרצונו להיות מלך בישראל (ובמילא ה"ז מרידה במלכות) הי' לה יסוד בפנימיות הענינים, מכיון שעבודתו של אדה"ז היתה באופן של "יחוד נפלא" עם ספי' המלכות וכו']. ובעניננו: כאשר נשמעת טענה שחסידי חב"ד אינם פעילים – הנה לכל לראש צריך כ"א לדעת שלטענה זו אין שחר, והרי עד עתה עסקו בהפצת המעיינות ופעלו עולם ומלואו! אבל ביחד עם זה, עצם טענה כזו יש בה הוראה בעבודתו, והיא – שלמרות כל מה שעשה ופעל, הנה מכיון שהי' יכול לפעול יותר, "כדבעי לי' לא עבד", ה"ז נחשב כמו שלא פעל, ובמילא עליו לפעול כהנה וכהנה. ולכן היתה ההתעוררות לאחרונה להוסיף ביתר שאת וביתר עז בפעולות בכל עניני יהדות הן עם ילדי ישראל והן עם זקני ישראל ומה שביניהם וכו'.

In one of his letters pertaining to the claims made against Chassidim by their opponents, the Alter Rebbe writes, “I gave joy into my heart from the time that I heard that they [the opponents] are sputtering with great lies etc.” Though their claims were completely unfounded, however, since “one is not suspected of something unless he has…” there must be some deeper basis for it (for example, their claim that the Alter Rebbe wanted to be king of the Jewish people was completely untrue, but still was a reflection of the Alter Rebbe’s wondrous union with the sefirah of Malchus etc.). Similarly: when we hear that a claim is made that Chabad Chassidim aren’t active – we must know that this claim has no basis; Chassidim have been spreading the wellsprings and accomplishing entire worlds! But at the same time, the very fact that such a claim is made serves as a directive for one’s service: however much one may have accomplished, it can be considered as though he wasn’t active, because he could have done more – and therefore he must now increase his activities many times over. This is why we have been campaigning lately to increase even more in all activities and all aspects of Yiddishkeit, for children as well as the elderly, and everyone in between etc.
