מההוראות מכללות ימי החנוכה שבכל יום מוסיפים להדליק עוד נר, דהיינו, שיש להעלות בקודש, ובכ"י צ"ל הוספה שבאין ערוך ובלי גבול ממש ביחס לעבודתו ביום האתמול (כידוע שגם בבלי-גבול יש דרגות וכו'), ושיש להאיר את ה"חוץ" ב"נר מצוה ותורה אור" וכו'. ה"אבן הבוחן" האמיתי באם קלט האדם את עניני חנוכה בפנימיותו והם התעצמו עמו‏ – ‏הוא ביום שלאחרי חנוכה, כאשר אין ציווי הקב"ה לקיים הוראות אלו, ואעפ"כ ממשיך האדם על דעת עצמו ומקיים את ההוראות של ימי החנוכה במעשה בפועל. ועוד ענין בזה עפ"י המבואר בכ"מ בטעם השמחה הגדולה דהקפות בשמח"ת בגלל היותה מנהג ישראל ולא דאורייתא, ועד"ז מובן גודל המעלה בקיום הוראות אלו דוקא לאחרי ימי החנוכה וכו'.

One of the general lessons from Chanukah is to add another candle every day, meaning, to advance in holiness – that every day one must add incomparable more, in an unlimited fashion, compared to the previous day’s work (because there are different levels within “unlimited” as well). The true test as to whether one has internalized this lesson is that after Chanukah, when there’s no command to do so, one nevertheless continues the approach of continuously adding from day to day on his own, and in a way that is expressed practically. This is similar to the explanation of the greatness of hakafos – precisely because it’s a custom and not an obligation: similarly, we can understand the great quality of continuing to follow the approach of Chanukah specifically after Chanukah is over.
