Welcome back to the Future Template Parent Podcast! This week, I discuss interweaves in EMDR therapy, sharing personal insights and experiences. There is a lot of ground to cover, so that I will break this topic into two parts. In part one of Interweaves in EMDR Therapy, I  look at Shapiro's definition of interweaves as a tool to help facilitate movement in complex EMDR cases, in contrast to the perception that “trusting the process” and refraining from interweaves is sufficient for successful processing of non-complex cases.

In this episode, I first define interweaves and then discuss my process of starting to understand how to use them more effectively. I share some of my misconceptions and fears about Interweaves that I experienced at the beginning of my EMDR journey. Lastly, I'll talk about one of my favorite interweaves, parts work interweaves, that I use frequently in my EMDR work—our work with Interweaves as an EMDR therapist.

Topics Covered:

  • How interweaves provide opportunities for adapting EMDR therapy to fit the clinician’s personal style and comfort level;
  • Interweaves in complex cases involving earlier attachment experiences and traumatic memories;
  • Tips for using interweaves in intensive EMDR therapy sessions;
  • How to use simple but effective parts to work interweave

“I don't think I've ever fully processed a memory with a client without using a single interweave. You know, I keep waiting for that non-complex case to walk in my door.” -  Carolyn
