בקשר לנס השמן בחנוכה, ידועה השאלה למה הוצרכו לנס כדי להדליק המנורה בשמן טהור, הרי הדלקת המנורה היא עבודת ציבור ו"טומאה דחוי' היא בציבור"? [מה שתירצו שלא היו יכולים להדליק בשמן טמא כי אז היתה המנורה נטמאת, ומכיון שזו היתה אז מנורה חדשה, הרי בהדלקת הנרות הי' גם הענין דחינוך המנורה, וזה לא מצינו שיוכל להיות בטומאה – אינו מספיק, שהרי בלאה"כ הוצרכו לעשות את המנורה מעץ שלא תקבל טומאה וכו'] אלא אע"פ שעפ"י דין היו יכולים לחנך המקדש והמנורה כו' בטומאה, עשה ה' נס שיוכלו לעשות זאת בטהרה, כדי להראות חיבתן של ישראל שעושים מצוה יסודית כזו – בטהרה. וההוראה: בזמן הגלות מתבטאת חיבתן של ישראל בזה שמוסרים נפשם אפי' על דקדוק והידור שאפשר למצוא לו "היתר" עפ"י שו"ע, כדי שלא ליפרד ח"ו מההתקשרות עם ה'. וכשמתנהגים באופן כזה, הנה גם כאשר זה מעטים וחלשים נגד רבים גיבורים – מצליחים!

Regarding the miracle of the oil on Chanukah, the question is asked: why did they need a miracle to light the Menorah with pure oil, if the Menorah is a community service, and “impurity is overridden for the public”? (The answer is given that since it was a new Menorah, it’s initiation as a service vessel would be by lighting it; since we don’t find that impurity is overridden in the case of service vessel not yet initiated, the Menorah would have become impure once the impure oil was poured into it. But this answer isn’t sufficient, because in any event they made the Menorah of wood in order that it wouldn’t be susceptible to impurity etc.) The answer is that even though they legally could have dedicated the Beis Hamikdash and the Menorah etc. in a state of impurity, nevertheless, Hashem performed a miracle to enable them to do it purity, to show His love for the Jewish people etc. The lesson is: during the exile, the love of the Jewish people is expressed by having mesiras-nefesh even for a minor detail of Yiddishkeit; even when it’s possible to find a permissible way to do something in “impurity”, we decline to do so, in order to not be disconnected from Hashem chas v’shalom. And when we conduct ourselves this way, even if we are the few and weak against the many and the mighty – we succeed.
