ערב חנוכה שייך במיוחד לחנוכה: אע"פ שבכל ערב שבת וחג ישנו הדין ד"תוספת שבת" וכיו"ב אבל רק כ"הוספה" לעיקר, משא"כ בחנוכה, הנה זמן הדלקת נר הא' (ועד"ז בכל יום) דחנוכה, לכתחילה הוא "משתשקע החמה"‏ – ‏בערב חנוכה לפני צאת הכוכבים! (וי"ל א' הביאורים בזה, כי נרות המקדש, מקור הענין דנרות חנוכה, מצותן ביום). ועד"ז בנוגע למעשה בפועל: בכדי להדליק נר הא' דחנוכה כמצותו לכתחילה מיד כשתשקע החמה, עליו להכין א"ע לזה כבר בערב חנוכה, וכ"ש כשמדובר בנוגע ההכנות ל"מבצע חנוכה", שזה מכריח עוד יותר לנצל את השעות הנותרות דערב חנוכה כדי שכאו"א יוכל להדליק את נר הא' דחנוכה, שבו כלול כל שמונת ימי החנוכה, וכמצותו לכתחילה מיד "משתשקע החמה".

Erev Chanukah has a unique connection to Chanukah: Though every there is an obligation to “add” to every Shabbos and Yom Tov from the day before it, in that case, the addition is ancillary to the day itself. But on Chanukah, the set time for lighting the first candle is specifically on Erev Chanukah before nightfall! (We can explain that one explanation is because the Menorah in the Beis Hamikdash was lit during the day). Similarly, as a practical matter: in order to light the first candle at its proper time immediately upon sunset, one must prepare the candles on Erev Chanukah; certainly, when it comes to Mivtza Chanukah – it is imperative to utilize the remaining hours of Erev Chanukah to see to it that every Jew has the ability to light the first candle, which encompasses all eight days of Chanukah, and in the optimal manner – immediately after sunset.
