לאחרי ששוחרר אדה"ז אמר שרצונו ללכת לדירת החסיד ר' מרדכי ליעפלער, אלא שב"טעות" הובילוהו לדירתו של מנגד שציערו במשך כמה שעות, עד שחסידים מצאו אותו ורצו "לשלם" למנגד, אבל אדה"ז לא נתן להם מצד "כבוד האכסניא", וגמר את הכוס תה ויצא [באור לכ' כסלו]. ולכאו' הרי הגאולה היתה באופן נסי ואיך שייכת "טעות" שיכנס לדירת מנגד, ששם, בגלות אצל יהודי, הי' לו יותר צער מבגלות אצל הגויים?! ומוכרח לומר שגם זה הי' שלב בגאולה, ואדרבה‏ – ‏הנקודה של גאולת אדה"ז היא שזו לא היתה באופן שצד א' ניצח, אלא "כי ברבים היו עמדי", וזה התבטא בהתחלת הגאולה שנכנס לדירת המנגד והוא נתן לו כיבוד (כוס תה)! וההוראה: כאו"א מבנ"י צ"ל שותף בעבודה של הפצת המעיינות, והיום לא יכול להיות מנגדים אמיתיים כי כל ההתנגדות היתה בנוי' על החשש שדרך החסידות יביא קולות, ובפועל רואים שזה הביא לחומרות ולא לקולות!

‏משיחת י"ט כסלו ה'תשכ"ו

When the Alter Rebbe was freed from prison, he wanted to go to the home of the chassid R’ Mordechai Liepler, but was taken to the home of an opponent of Chassidus, who antagonized the Alter Rebbe for a few hours. When the chassidim discovered this, the Alter Rebbe forbade them from causing the man any trouble, and finished the cup of tea the man had prepared for him [on the night of 20 Kislev]. Seemingly, after such a miraculous liberation, how could such a “mistake” have happened, that the Alter Rebbe now suffered even more at the hands of a Jew than he had at the hands of gentiles? We must say that this, too, is part of the liberation: the key point of the liberation was that it wasn’t a victory of one side over the other; rather, “his soul was redeemed in peace” because “the many were with me.” This was expressed at the very beginning of his liberation, when a Jew who opposed Chassidus now acknowledged the liberation and provided refreshments in its honor! The lesson is: every Jew must participate in the work of spreading the wellsprings; today, there can no longer be true opponents, because the opposition was based only on a fear that chassidus would result in leniencies in Torah and mitzvos, but in fact we see that it resulted in keeping Torah and mitzvos more stringently!
