Episode Details

Supernatural Season 5, Episode 7, The Curious Case of Dean Winchester recap 👴 A 25-year-old man drops dead of old age, a dapper Irish witch is playing high-stakes poker where the chips are YEARS of your life, and Dean loses big... and turns into an old man, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. (Yes, the title is a nod to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.)

The boys and Bobby track a string of strange deaths to a mysterious poker game run by Patrick (Hal Ozsan of Dawson's Creek), a 900-year-old witch with a great suit and an even better Irish accent. Bobby, frustrated and stuck in his wheelchair, takes a gamble of his own, and Dean steps in to save him... and ends up 80 years old (Chad Everett). Now it's up to Sam to play for his brother's life.

Episode Highlights:

• The makeup on aged-up Bobby (really well done)
• Old Dean (Chad Everett), complete with sciatica and bad knees
• Dean calling Bobby Ironside (we had to Google it: it's a 1960s TV detective in a wheelchair)
• The poker chips are plywood and showmanship
• Sam, supposedly the worst poker player of the bunch (fun fact: Jared won a celebrity poker tournament in real life)
• Sam's all-in moment, and Patrick's tell
• Bobby's raw, heartbreaking honesty about where he is right now

In the lore segment, we dig into chronokinesis, the psychic power to manipulate time, the Gaelic age manipulation spell behind Patrick's poker game, and the real-life Celtic curse: hemochromatosis, a genetic condition that can masquerade as typical aging.

Dean: "How'd you get here so fast?"
Bobby: "Brains trump legs, apparently."
