אופן סיפור המעשה של המאסר והגאולה ע"י ר' נחום נכדו של אדה"ז הי', שהי' מקדים לספר אודות עשר שנים שהי' אדה"ז אצל המגיד, חמש שנים שהי' ראש החבריא קדישא, ועשרים שנה שעסק בהתפשטות תורת החסידות, ואז הי' המאסר. ולכאו', מדוע לא התחיל כבר מלידת אדה"ז? אלא מכיון שהקטרוג למע' והמאסר לא הי' קשור עם עצם הענין שנשמה כזאת היתה בעולם, אלא כאשר נשמה זו התחילה לגלות תפקידה וענינה בעולם. וזה התחיל בנסיעתו להמגיד. וההוראה: כל זמן שאין לאדם העלם והסתר, מנגדים קשיים וספיקות, ה"ז סימן שעדיין לא התחיל למלא תפקידו בעולם! ומהי התחלת מילוי התפקיד – להיות תלמיד ומקבל במשך עשר שנים! ובמכ"ש וק"ו מאדה"ז: שעלי' שלא בערך שלו ברוחניות באה דוקא ע"י הקדמת הדוחק בגשמיות והספיקות, ועד"ז העלי' של כ"א קשורה ומתחילה דוקא כשעוסק בענינים שבהם צריך יגיעה דוקא.

When the Alter Rebbe’s grandson R’ Nachum would tell the story of the imprisonment and release of Yud Tes Kislev, he would begin by describing how the Alter Rebbe spent ten years as a student of the Maggid, followed by five years as the head of the Chevraya Kadisha, followed by twenty years working to spread Chassidus, which was followed by his arrest. Seemingly, why didn’t he begin with the Alter Rebbe’s birth? The answer is because the imprisonment was decreed above not just because there was such a soul in the world, but because that soul started to be revealed in the world, which began when he traveled to the Maggid. The lesson is that as long as a person doesn’t encounter challenges, doubts and opposition, that shows he hasn’t yet begun to fulfill his mission in the world. How does one begin fulfilling his mission? By being a student and mekabel for ten years, as we find by the Alter Rebbe: only after setting out to be a student, and experiencing hardship, did he come to the ultimate spiritual elevation. And this applies all the more so to every individual: one’s ultimate revelation depends on, and begins, specifically when he involves himself in work that requires toil.
