Along the way, he held 21 different jobs in eleven states, embracing roles such as a schoolteacher, tractor-trailer driver, and advertising professional. His stint as a screenwriter in Hollywood allowed him to immerse himself in storytelling from a cinematic perspective, which later influenced his approach to writing novels and non-fiction works, such as Gates of Fire, A Man At Arms, and The War of Art.
