Supernatural: I Believe the Children Are Our Future (5x06) | Recap & Lore

Season 5 Episode 6 Published 2 years, 11 months ago
Description

Supernatural Season 5, Episode 6, I Believe the Children Are Our Future recap 🪀 Urban legends are coming true in a small Nebraska town: joy buzzers that actually electrocute, a tooth fairy who really takes your teeth, and Pop Rocks and Coke that do exactly what your childhood friends warned you about, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. (Yes, the title is a Whitney Houston reference.)

But first, an apology: listener Theresa called us out for missing Dean's THIGH HOLSTER in The End. We're so sorry. We'll do better. Then it's on to Carthage, Nebraska, where the boys track the chaos to a sweet, ordinary 11-year-old named Jesse (Gattlin Griffith). Cas reveals what Jesse really is: half demon, half human, and potentially the most powerful being on the planet. And the demons want him too, and they've got a way in through his birth mom, Julia (Ever Carradine).

Episode Highlights:

  • Agents Page and Plant (Led Zeppelin, not the Who. We were embarrassed.)
  • The Tooth Fairy: a bearded man in a pink leotard with pliers (we clenched EVERYTHING)
  • Dean's hairy palm, which he waited to show Sam on purpose
  • Dean testing his theory on a caught-off-guard Sam
  • Cas calling Jesse a cambion... and the Antichrist
  • Pocket-sized Cas (the action figure we didn't know we needed)
  • The episode's many similarities to Good Omens
  • Jesse's choice at the end
  • Fun fact: Jesse's actor played young Gunpowder on The Boys

In the lore segment, we dig into the cambion, which started out meaning a changeling before it came to mean the half-human offspring of an incubus or succubus, from William of Auvergne and the Malleus Maleficarum to Martin Luther, plus legendary examples like Merlin and Robert the Devil.

Castiel: "This child is half demon and half human, but far more powerful than either. Other cultures call this hybrid a cambion, or a kalikantzaros. You know him as the Antichrist."
Dean: "That wasn't me."

Your turn, hunters: Which urban legend did YOU believe as a kid? And what would you do if you were Jesse? Tell us in the Spotify comments, leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (it's how new hunters find us), or send us fan mail. Bonus points for fandom fun facts we missed.
