Fatness in Libraries: Cultivation of Victimhood and Weaponization of Empathy, with Jenny Rogers
Description
Jenny and I discuss a video presentation that was sent to me by a viewer. Here's the link if you would like to watch it: https://www.nnlm.gov/training/class/fatness-and-libraries-amplifying-voices-fat-librarians-deia-work-region-6-spotlight In this training, a "fat-liberation" activist/advocate presents responses to a survey she took of librarians who are "fat" and also selected for other diversity criteria. She reads their responses, which describe difficulties they experience at work due to their physical size and/or their self-consciousness, while encouraging the audience to see them as victims of oppression, feel indignation on their behalf, and "advocate" for them, in true Social Justice Activist style. This is an excellent example of the weaponization of empathy.
