Description
Supernatural Season 5, Episode 3, Free to Be You and Me recap ⚡ Sam is trying to live a normal life, Dean and Cas hit the road to hunt down an archangel, and Castiel visits a den of iniquity on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. (For the record: we do not ship Destiel. But we see where they got it.)
The boys have gone their separate ways, and the episode cuts between their two lives with some of the best transitions in the series: Sam burning his IDs, Dean flashing a fake badge, Sam's soapy mop and Dean's bloody sword. Sam is bartending in a small town and getting flirted with by a coworker named Lindsey (Emma Bell), and he's being visited in his dreams by Jessica (Adrianne Palicki), who looks fabulous. Meanwhile, Cas pops up right behind Dean in the bathroom mirror with a mission: find God, by trapping and interrogating the archangel Raphael (Demore Barnes).
Episode Highlights:
- Shirtless Sammy in bed (in case you missed it)
- Those transitions. We rewound them three times. (J. Miller Tobin's final Supernatural episode, and what a send-off.)
- Cas on Dean's ass, and the longest stare-down in Supernatural history
- Cas and Bobby having side conversations we don't get to see
- Dean asking Cas how he'd spend his last night on earth, and taking him to a brothel
- Chastity in her angelic white teddy, and Cas ruining it in the most Cas way possible
- Raphael's vessel: catatonic and drooling one moment, terrifying the next (great performance and, fun fact, the drool was lube)
- Raphael's bombshell about God
- Cas: You're my bitch. (Holy cow, CAS.)
- Dean's very sweet talk with Cas about missing fathers
- Sam and the demons with a vial of blood (Tim, we hardly knew you)
- Mark Pellegrino's nonchalant delivery in the final scene, which is chilling
In the lore segment, we dig into the archangel Raphael, whose name means God heals: his role in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions, the Book of Tobit (where he disguises himself as a human to help Tobias), and his appearances in Renaissance art, like Perugino's painting of Raphael holding a fish.
Dean: "Whoa, whoa. Last time you zapped me someplace, I didn't poop for a week. We're driving."
Dean: "Dude, you full-on rebelled against Heaven. Iniquity's like one of the perks."
