Description

Synopsis

On the words “the years of the life of Sarah,” Rashi writes: “All of them equally good.” Seemingly, the Torah indicates that her years were not all equally good, for example, for the majority of her life she was called Sarai – “My princess but not to others” – and only later was she called Sarah – “to everyone”. Moreover, this very verse divides her life into categories of “one hundred years” and “twenty years” and “seven years”? The answer is that “Hashem only requests…according to his ability.” He requests that at every stage in one’s life, he should serve Hashem to the utmost of his ability in accordance with the service needed from him in that stage. Therefore, although a person advances in holiness, such as from “seven years” to “twenty years”, he must achieve perfection in each stage according to his current state at that time. And this itself prepares him to later ascend higher. Moreover: in every stage, such as “seven years” or “twenty years” etc., there is the specific aspect of service needed from him during that period. And therefore, only at the end of Sarah’s life, when we know that she fully performed the service of each stage of her life, do we know that “all of them were equally good.”
