לאחרי חודש תשרי – אותיות "רשית" – בחי' "ראש" ו"ישראל" ("לי ראש") – מתחילה העבודה בחודש חשון של "ויעקב – מלשון עקב – הלך לדרכו". ובהנהגת האדם: בחי' "ראש" ו"ישראל" הו"ע לימוד התורה ובחי' "יעקב" הו"ע מעשה המצות. וזהו כללות החילוק בין חודש תשרי שענינו תורה (וזהו שא' הטעמים לתקיעת שופר בר"ה הוא – קול השופר דמתן תורה) וחודש חשון שענינו מעשה בפועל, גם בנוגע לעניני הרשות – "מר-חשון" מלשון טיפה, שפירושו – טיפת גשמים, שקשור עם חרישה וזריעה וכו', ששייך במיוחד בחודש חשון וכו'. ובזה ישנה הוראה נפלאה משיעור חומש היומי [חמישי פ' חיי שרה] שבו אומר אליעזר עבד אברהם "וה' הצליח דרכי" – כאשר הולך ל"חרן" למלא שליחותו של אברהם או של רבותינו נשיאינו, וזה נעשה "דרכו" – מבטיחה לו התורה שיוכל לומר "והוי' ["הוי'" לא רק משם אלקים, "והוי' – בהסכמת "בית דינו" של מעלה] הצליח דרכי"!

Following the month of Tishrei – whose letters (reishis) connote the rosh (head) and the name Yisrael (li rosh) – begins the service of the month of Cheshvan, “and Yaakov (from the word “heel”) went on his way.” The level of rosh and Yisrael is Torah study, while Yaakov represents the performance of the mitzvos. This is the general distinction between the month of Tishrei, whose theme is Torah (the shofar on Rosh Hashanah is associated with the shofar at the giving of the Torah), and Cheshvan, whose theme is action, as seen in the name “Mar”-Cheshvan, meaning a drop, i.e., a drop of rain, which is associated with plowing and sowing – the work of the month of Cheshvan. And here we find a wondrous lesson from today’s Chumash [chamishi of Parashas Chayei Sarah]: Eliezer, Avraham's servant, says “and Hashem has made my way succeed” – when one goes to “Charan” to fulfill the mission of Avraham, or of our Rebbe’im, and it becomes “his way” – the Torah assures him that he will be able to say, “And Havayah (not just the Name Elokim) has made my way successful!”
