פעם בכל חודש הי' הצ"צ בוחן בעצמו את כל ילדי החדר בו למד בנו המהר"ש ולאח"ז נתן להם מתנות. וזוהי הוראה לאלו שמציעים להם ללכת ולהתעסק בלימוד א' ב' עם ילדי ישראל, וטוענים: 'הוא כ"משכיל", "עובד", "מאריך בתפלה", יוותר על כ"ז ויתעסק בזה?!.. זה ניתן להעשות ע"י אחרים!', עליו לדעת שזה "מצוה שבגופו": כדי ש"גופו" לא יהי' מגושם כ"כ עליו לעשות היפך טבעו ולאסוף ילדי ישראל וללמוד אתם א' ב'! כמו הצ"צ שהתעסק בעצמו בקביעות מידי חודש בחודש עם ילדים קטנים! ואפי' אם עד עכשיו היתה עבודתו בבחי' מס"נ ויחו"ע, עליו לדעת שיש עבודה נעלית יותר‏ – ‏לצאת "החוצה" ולהסתובב בין ילדים ולפרסם שה' מנהיג העולם! וכמו שביאר כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שהמס"נ של רבי עקיבא, שכל ימיו "חיפש" מס"נ "מתי יבוא לידי ואקיימנו", לא מגיעה למס"נ של אברהם אבינו שהלך בעצמו‏ – ‏בין הגוים‏ – ‏להקריא בשם הוי' א-ל עולם!

The Tzemach Tzedek had a set time each month when he would personally test all the children in the cheder where his son, the Rebbe Maharash, learned, and after testing them he would give them prizes. When we talk about going out to gather Jewish children and teach them Alef-Beis, some people claim: I’m a big maskil and oved etc., why should I occupy myself with this, when others can do it? But we must know that this is a “mitzvah applicable to the body”: in order for one’s body to become more refined etc., he must go against his nature, by gathering Jewish children to teach them Alef-Beis – just like the Tzemach Tzedek, who personally took the time every month to engage in the education of young children! And even if until now one was busy with mesiras-nefesh and contemplating the Divine oneness, he must know that there’s an even greater service – to go to the “outside” and gather children and teach them that Hashem runs the world! As my father-in-law the Rebbe explains, the mesiras-nefesh of Rabbi Akiva, who strove for mesiras-nefesh – “when will I have the opportunity to fulfill it” – isn’t as great as the mesiras-nefesh of Avraham Avinu, who personally went out among the gentiles to influence them to call out by the name of Hashem, G-d of the world!
