Synopsis

Regarding Avraham Avinu, [the second aliyah of] Parashas Vayera states, “For I have known him because he commands his sons and his household after him, that they should keep the way of Hashem to perform righteousness and justice…” (and if he educated his children to do so, he certainly did so himself): Avraham’s tzedakah and kindness – “performing righteousness and justice” – weren’t a function of his nature; rather, he did it because that is the “way of Hashem.” And this is why, as the Midrash states, Avraham would use unconventional means, if necessary, to get his guests to thank Hashem for the food he served them, even requiring them to pay for it until they agreed: the point of his acts of kindness was to spread G-dliness in the world, to the extent not only of a “Master in this palace,” but of Keil Olam (not Keil Ha’Olam) – meaning that the whole identity of the world is only that of Hashem Who creates it etc.; first he tried to do this with Chesed, but if that didn’t work, he resorted to Gevurah etc.
