This word has had many meanings within the Greek language over the eons. During the Hellenistic period είδος (oedos) meant ‘beautiful shape’ or just  ‘beauty’ and its diminutive was the official name of small poems describing the calm,  simplicity and beautiful scenery that came with living in the countryside.
