His first Ohio State defense finished higher in 2022 in all four major defensive categories than in 2021, including significant improvements in total defense and passing defense. Consider: Ohio State was 14th in total defense in 2022 (321.5 ypg); 59th in 2021 (372.6); 24th in scoring defense (21.0 ppg) vs. 38th (22.8 ppg); 26th in rushing defense (121.1) vs. 28th (126.7); and 26th in passing defense (200.5) vs. 96th (245.8). The 2023 campaign will be Knowles’ 36th season in collegiate coaching and it will also represent his 16th year as a defensive coordinator and his 12th as a linebackers coach. Knowles came to Ohio State from Oklahoma State, where his defenses were on an upward trajectory in each of his four seasons in Stillwater. The Cowboys improved each year under Knowles in total defense, scoring defense, rushing yards per game, passing yards per game, passing efficiency, first downs per game, yards per play, yards per pass, rushing yards per game and yards per rush.
