097: Creative Ways to Make Money

Published 2 years, 6 months ago
Description

This week on Theonomoney, Jeremy lists creative ways you can make more money to provide for your family. He gives three broader categories, with more specific approaches within each of those broader categories. There is much to learn from in this episode, so listen to it and start brainstorming what you can do to provide better for your family and be more independent from potentially unChristian employers to put food on the table.

Whatever approach you take in being creative to make more money, by US Law (or the law in whatever country wherein you live), you are to properly report income and pay appropriate taxes on it. This would even include trading work, such as the example given in the episode, or payment in physical objects rather than money. While I find our heavy taxation we are forced to pay in the US unjust and immoral, Article VII of the Warrenton Declaration (quoted below) describes it well. Unjust taxes are indeed paid under duress and because complilance is expedient, as the alternative would eventually result in prison (either immediately or in fines that if unpaid would eventually result in a prison sentence if they and the repercussions of not paying them are continuously rejected).

There are ways to add work that you did on your own, without a W-2 from an employer, to your tax return submission each year, such as side work you did for a friend for which he paid you a few hundred dollars in cash. To help reduce the taxation burden on such income legally, be sure to report every legitmate tax write-off you can related to such income, even including the miles you drove at the stated IRS mileage rate in each given year. For example, if a friend who lives an hour away paid you $200 cash to help him for a day, you may find that by writing off those miles to drive there and back you can legally reduce half or more of that income when you report it on your taxes.

For more ways to legally reduce your taxable burden, speak to a tax expert who can help you with such things. There are many creative ways to do this, just as there are many creative ways to make money in the first place.

Warrenton Declaration, Article VII:

VII. WE AFFIRM that in instances where a Christian’s responsibilities to God and his fellow man are not hindered, the Christian may choose to obey some unjust commands when such commands can be obeyed without engaging in sin. This may be because compliance with the command is done under duress, because compliance is expedient, or because compliance is rendered in an exaggerated fashion in order to further expose the wickedness of the command (Rom. 12:20; Matt 5:38-42).
