מצינו שכל הד' מינים נקראים על שם הלולב, כמו בנוסח הברכה "על נטילת לולב". ולכאו', כיון שהאתרוג יש בו טעם וריח, תורה ומצוות, למה הוא טפל ל"לולב" שיש בו רק טעם ולא ריח? והביאור: מצוות קשורות עם עניני העולם שבהם נעשית המצוות בפועל, משא"כ תורה, הרי יכולים לישב בהתבודדות וללמוד תורה, ואדרבה – עיקר ענין התורה הוא במצב של התבודדות ולמעלה מעניני העולם. ומזה מובן שמי שבחלקו מונח גם במצוות, אי אפשר שלא ידבק בו משהו מגשמיות העולם, ואינו מגיע למעמד של עילוי וזיכוך כמו מי שכל ענינו הוא תורה. ולכן כאשר באים כל ד' הסוגים של בנ"י להתאחד – נקראת המצוה על שם ה"לולב", היהודי שכל ענינו אינו אלא תורה, והברכה, שענינו לפעול המשכה מלמעלה, נעשית על ידי מי שהוא קרוב יותר למעלה. ובנוגע לפועל: כיון שנמצאים כאן גם אלו שעדיין לא יצאו לעסוק בעולם וכל ענינם הוא תורה – צ"ל קולם נשמע במיוחד...

We find that all four species are called by the name lulav, as we say in the bracha, “[Who commanded us with His mitzvos and commanded us] regarding taking the lulav.” Seemingly, since esrog has taste and smell – Torah and mitzvos – why is it secondary to lulav, which has taste but not smell? The reason is because mitzvos involve worldly matters, whereas Torah study primarily transcends worldly matters. Therefore, when a person spends part of his time in mitzvos, some of the physicality of the world inevitably sticks to him, so he doesn’t have the purity and loftiness of someone who is engaged exclusively in Torah. Therefore, when all four categories of the Jewish people come together – the mitzvah is called “lulav,” the Jew who is engaged only in Torah, and the bracha, which draws down from Above, is brought about by the one who is closer to Heaven. Practically speaking: since there are yeshivah students here who haven’t yet gone out into the world – their voice in particular should be heard…
