The Penn State Nittany Lions football team faces off against Northwestern on Saturday for the team's second road game of the season. Penn State vs. Quarters

So far this season, Penn State has played conservative defenses that want to keep a lid on big plays. We'll explain how the quarters defense affects the Nittany Lions' passing attack and their rushing efforts. Head coach Jame Franklin explained how this two-high defense differs from the rest of the coverages in the same family.

"There's a big difference between two safeties, with a cover to philosophy two safeties, with a quarter-quarter half philosophy and then two safeties, that are playing quarters, because really quarters you could really put into, you know, a totally different family because it's a way to play middle of the field open but really technically nine guys in the box," Franklin said.

We'll discuss how that's affected the Nittany Lions' passing and rushing attacks through four games this year.

Tough, but how good are they?

We'll dive into film analysis of the Northwestern defense next and discuss the nature of how this team plays defense. Are they as bad as the rushing stats would indicate? We'll highlight the strength of the Northwestern defense and how they have given up so many big plays in the run game.

As with most games, Penn State will have the advantage on passing downs with an elite pass rush that can threaten any quarterback. But where is there a distinct advantage this week? We'll look at a matchup that Penn State can exploit, especially on third down.

From there, we'll start to give predictions about how this game should go for Penn State from a game perspective. Is this the week Penn State puts explosive plays on the board? We'll explain how and why that's the case.
