The Penn State Nittany Lions didn't get their explosive win on Saturday, but they still got a win over Northwestern on Saturday. Join the BWI Live Postgame Show to discuss the win and the Nittany Lion's 5-0 start. We'll break down the game, what happened, and how Northwestern's defense frustrated the Penn State offense.

Despite the lack of explosive offense, the Nittany Lions scored 17 points in the third quarter to get a large enough lead to keep Northwestern at bay. Quarterback Ben Bryant also went down with an apparent shoulder injury after a third-down sack by Zane Durant that extinguished Northwestern's best chance to make the game competitive.

Penn State defense puts up another elite performance

Not only did Penn State knock out the starting quarterback for Northwestern, but they suffocated the Wildcats offense through most of the game. Penn State racked up 10 TFLs in the competitive portion of the game and corralled four sacks and five QB hits.

Once again, the defense held the line while the offense struggled to generate points in bunches. They limited Northwestern to under 200 yards of total offense and less than a yard per rush. The starting secondary still hasn't allowed a passing touchdown through five games of the year.

Offense not stuck, but slow

Yet the story coming out of the game once again is the Penn State offense that struggled to generate explosive plays against a wounded Northwestern defense. The offense averaged 3.4 yards per carry on the day and the rushing offense failed to register a run of over 20 yards against a defense that allowed 20+ run plays of that kind through the last two games.

The passing game had more success, but Allar was once again less effective on the road, completing 55% of his passes on the day. Injuries cropped up on Saturday as well. Starting running back Kaytron Allen also missed the second half of the game, and JB Nelson left on a cart in the first half. The team was already without starting lineman Landon Tengwall with a career-ending injury during training camp.

Join the BWI Live postgame show to get your thoughts on air! We'll be taking your questions and comments about the team's win. Were you satisfied with another win that took time to develop? Or are you frustrated with the lack of big plays and dominant offense? We'll take you through the game and discuss today's key points but highlight season-long themes from the team.
