אע"פ שענין התשובה קשור עם תנועה של מרירות עצומה ע"ז שירד ממדרגתו וכו', אבל ביחד עם זה ה"ז קשור גם עם תנועה של שמחה גדולה ביותר, כי הרי אם קיום כל מצוה צ"ל מתוך שמחה עצומה שבאה מההתבוננות בגודל הענין שבקיום רצונו של הקב"ה ושעי"ז ניתן לו הזדמנות להתקשר עם הקב"ה וכו', הרי עאכו"כ מצות התשובה שכל ענינה היא לתקן את החסרונות שבשאר כל המצוות וכו', וא"כ השמחה שבמצות התשובה היא שמחה שכנגד השמחה שבכל המצוות! ויתירה מזו: כיון ש"במקום שבעלי תשובה עומדין אפי' צדיקים גמורים אינם יכולים לעמוד", שבמצות התשובה ישנו ענין שהוא לא בערך לשאר המצוות, הרי השמחה שבזה צ"ל גדולה יותר שלא בערך מהשמחה שבשאר כל המצוות. וענין זה של "בעלי תשובה" הוא העילוי שנפעל בנשמה ע"י ירידתה למטה להתלבש בגוף דוקא, ביחס למעמדה ומצבה למעלה קודם הירידה (דרגת צדיקים).

Though teshuvah involves tremendous bitterness over having stumbled from one’s level etc., at the same time it also involves the greatest joy. Because if every mitzvah must be done with great joy – by contemplating how it is an opportunity to fulfill Hashem’s will etc. – how much more so the mitzvah of teshuvah, which fills in what is lacking from all the mitzvos etc., and therefore, the joy of teshuvah corresponds to the joy of all the mitzvos! Moreover: “In the place where baalei teshuvah stand – even perfect tzaddikim cannot stand there,” meaning, teshuvah is incomparable to the rest of the mitzvos, and therefore, the joy it evokes must be incomparably greater than the joy of all the other mitzvos. And this aspect of “baalei teshuvah” is the advantage the soul receives by its descent into the body, over its state before its descent (the level of tzaddikim).
