Description
Hailing from Greensboro, Dino Hackett (Southern Guilford HS) began his college football career at Appalachian State in 1981. He earned All-Southern Conference in 1984 and 1985, as well as, All-American in 1985. Hackett’s No. 38 jersey Mountaineer jersey was retired in 1985.
In 1986, Hackett was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the second round. He recorded three sacks in both 1988 and 1990 for the Chiefs. Hackett was selected to the Pro Bowl team in 1988. Hackett finished out his career with the Seattle Seahawks in 1991.
The earliest draft pick in App State history, the 1985 first-team All-American was taken in the second round with the 35th pick by the Kansas City Chiefs.
IN THE NFL: He played in 88 career games – starting 82 – and all but three games were with KC. Named to 1988 Pro Bowl, but didn’t play due to injury.
COLLEGE STATS: Hackett holds App State records for total and solo tackles in a game (27/18) and season (200/106), as well as 20-tackle games in a season (6).
PRO STATS: According to the Chiefs media guide, Hackett had 140 tackles as a rookie, and 103 the next season (both team highs), on the way to 625 for his KC career. He also recorded 9 sacks and 6 forced fumbles. One KC blogger considers him the 45th best Chief ever.
In his final collegiate, game against ETSU, Hackett set a school single-game record with 27 total tackles. He also blocked two punts, recovered two fumbles, plus nabbed an INT.
