בפ' וילך מדובר אודות מצות "הקהל": שבזמן שביהמ"ק הי' קיים היו מתאספים בנ"י, אנשים נשים וטף, פעם בשבע שנים בביהמ"ק לשמוע את המלך קורא כמה פרשיות בתורה "למען ישמעו ולמען ילמדו.. כל הימים וגו'" - וזה השפיע על כל החיים בנוגע למעשה בפועל! ויתירה מזו: במצות הקהל נטלו חלק גם "טף" - גם עליהם השפיע מעמד "הקהל"! וההוראה לזמננו, כי הרי ביהמ"ק הרוחני, הנשמה, קיים גם היום בכאו"א: קריאת פרשיות אלו בפ' וילך צריכה להשפיע על כל החיים לקיים בפועל כל ההוראות של מצות הקהל, וגם על הילדים שבבית - שזה תלוי בעיקר על האם וכו'. וזוהי ההוראה מקריאת פ' זו לפני ר"ה: כי כדי לקבל ברכות ה' לכוח"ט, יש להכין את ה(בני-)בית ואת הילדים שיהיו כלים מתאימים לזה.

Parashas Vayelech talks about the mitzvah of Hakhel: When the Beis Hamikdash stood, the entire Jewish people, men, women and children, would gather once in seven years in the Beis Hamikdash to hear the king read certain passages from the Torah, “in order that they learn and fear…all the days etc.” – and this gathering had an effect on the rest of their lives, influencing their practical behavior. Moreover: the mitzvah was to even bring along very young children – Hakhel had an effect on them, too, even if they didn’t understand intellectually what was being read. The lesson for our times is that every Jew has a spiritual Beis Hamikdash in his soul; when we read about Hakhel in Parashas Vayelech, it must influence our entire lives to practically fulfill the lessons derived from Hakhel, and it must also influence the children in the house – and this depends primarily on the mother etc. And this is the lesson from the fact that we read this parashah before Rosh Hashana: to receive Hashem’s blessing to be inscribed and sealed for good, one should prepare his household, and the children in the household, to be a fitting receptacle for it.
