פתגם החסידים שח"י אלול מכניס חיות בעבודת חודש אלול. וזה קשור עם יום הולדתם של הבעש"ט ואדה"ז שכבר משעת לידתם היו "מזומנים" להיות נשיאי ישראל. ומובן שחודש אלול, חודש החשבון דשנה שעברה והכנה לשנה הבאה, הוא ענין של חיות מצ"ע, אלא שלגבי העילוי בחיות שנכנס בו ע"י ח"י אלול ה"ה בבחי' העדר החיות. וזה הי' גם ענינו של רבי ישראל בעש"ט, לעורר את ה"ישראל" גם באלו שהיו בהתעלפות והעצה היחידה היתה "ללחוש באזנם" את שמם "ישראל", ועד"ז פעולת הבעש"ט בכ"א היתה שמצבו הקודם לגבי מצבו לאחרי לחישת שמו של הבעש"ט תהי' בדוגמת "התעלפות גמורה" וכו'. בנוגע לפועל: להתחזק בעבודת ה' בחיות, בחודש אלול ובמיוחד מיום ח"י אלול, כ"כ, עד שעבודתו ע"ע תהי' בבחי' "העדר החיות"! ו"אני לדודי" יעורר את ה"ודודי לי" ש"ה' עוזרו" ומתברך בכוח"ט בגו"ר גם יחד.

The Chassidic adage that Chai Elul brings life into the month of Elul is connected to the birthday of the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe, who already at birth were “ready” to be leaders of the Jewish people. Of course, Elul, the month of stocktaking for the past year and preparation for the coming year, already has life, but compared to the increased vitality that Chai Elul brings, its prior state is considered to be “lacking life.” This was also the role R’ Yisrael Baal Shem Tov: to awaken the “Yisrael” in every Jew, even those in such a deep faint that the only solution is to “whisper their name into their ear”: the effect of “whispering the Baal Shem Tov’s name” is that one’s prior state is considered “fainting” compared to his state after the name was whispered into his ear. Practically: in the month of Elul, and especially from the day of Chai Elul, we must strengthen our Divine service with vitality, to the extent that our prior Divine is considered “lacking life.” And through the service of “I am my beloved’s,” we awaken the level of “My beloved is mine” – Hashem will help every Jew and bless him with a good and sweet year, spiritually and physically.
