The family works hard to finish their treehouse "nest" and spends their first night sleeping there.

It should be noted that in those days young boys were taught how to use firearms and often hunted for the family. Its not unrealistic that a family marooned on an island would kill just about anything that walks or flies.

Their biggest challenge would be finding fresh (not brackish) water and making some kind of estimate as to how much game there is on the island.
