יחודו של חודש אלול מבאר אדה"ז עפ"י משל "למלך שקודם בואו לעיר יוצאין אנשי העיר לקראתו ומקבלים פניו בשדה, ואז רשאין כל מי שרוצה לצאת ולהקביל פניו והוא מקבל את כולם בסבר פנים יפות ומראה פנים שוחקות לכולם", והיינו, אע"פ שכל השנה "הנה ה' נצב עליו . . ומביט עליו וכו'" שמזה מובן עד כמה חשוב אצל הקב"ה כל מעשה דיבור ומחשבה של כאו"א מישראל, אבל בחודש אלול מודגש שגם מצב כזה שהאדם נמצא "בשדה", הוא עוסק בענינים שאינם עצמם עבודת ה' (אף שמותרים עפ"י שו"ע), חשוב אצל הקב"ה והוא נמצא שם ביחד אתו ומקדיש לו את כל תשומת-הלב. וכשהוא מרגיל א"ע להרגיש כך בחודש אלול ה"ז פועל גם על כללות ההנהגה במשך השנה הבאה.

The uniqueness of Elul is illustrated by the Alter Rebbe’s analogy of a king who greets the city people in the field, and “receives them all with a pleasant countenance and shows them all a smiling countenance,” meaning, even though “Hashem stands over” a person all year “to determine if he is serving Him properly,” which shows how much Hashem values every thought, speech, and action of every Jew, however in Elul, it is emphasized that this applies even when a person is “in the field,” engaged in matters that are not directly part of Divine service (even though they are permissible, and ultimately facilitate his Divine service). Even one’s work “in the field” is important to Hashem, and He is with him in the field, giving him His full attention. And when a person accustoms himself to feel this throughout the entire month of Elul, that has an effect on his behavior in the coming year as well.
