לפני מ"ת היו צריכים לנצח את עמלק. ענין עמלק הוא "אשר קרך בדרך" [כמ"ש בסוף פ' כי תצא]. ובזה ב' פירושים: מלשון "קרירות", לקרר את התפעלות בנ"י‏ – ‏כבן בנו של עשו בן יצחק וכו' בא עם "טענה צודקת": 'הרי לך, כ"בעל שכל", "לא מתאים" להקדים נעשה לנשמע... הרי התורה "היא חכמתכם וגו'", וגם עפ"י השכל תהי' המסקנא שצ"ל נעשה!', 'תלמד תורה, אבל לא כ"יעקב איש תם" בלי שאלות, אלא כ"עשו יודע ציד" שכל דבר אצלו הוא עם חשבון וכו''. יש לדעת ש"קרירות" זו תביא בסוף את "אשר קרך בדרך" בפירוש השני: מלשון "קרי"‏ – ‏החיות שצ"ל בקדושה, "פרו ורבו ומלאו את הארץ וכבשוה", לעשות לו ית' דירה בתחתונים ‏ – ‏הולכת לבטלה‏ – ‏כחות הקליפה מלבישים אותה ועי"ז מתרבה כחות הקליפה באופן נורא!

Before Matan-Torah, the Jewish people had to win over Amalek. The function of Amalek is “asher karcha baderech” [as it says at the end of Parashas Ki Seitzei], which has two interpretations: “Kerirus,” to cool down a Jew’s excitement for Torah – like a grandson of Esav, son of Yitzchok etc., who makes a seemingly “valid” argument: You’re an intellectual person, it doesn’t befit you to put “we will do” before “we will hear,” because the Torah is “your wisdom” etc., and moreover, once you understand, you’ll eventually come “to do” in any event! So learn Torah, but don’t be like “Yaakov, an innocent man” who asks no questions; rather, be like “Esav, who understood hunting,” who did everything with calculation etc. We must know that this coldness ultimately results in the other kind of asher karcha baderech – related to the word “keri” – that the vitality that is supposed to be used for holiness, to “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it,” and make the world into a dwelling for Hashem – goes to waste – and the forces of kelipah enclothe it, causing kelipah to be magnified in a terrible fashion.
