לאחרונה דובר שבמסגרת "מבצע מזוזה" יעוררו גם על בדיקת המזוזות ותפילין. וע"ז הקשו כו"כ ממ"ש בגמ' ובהלכה ש"מזוזת היחיד" צריכה בדיקה רק פעמיים בשמיטה! ותפילין לא צריכים בדיקה כלל! - הנה קושייתם היא היפך הפשט: שם מדובר בנוגע בדיקת מזוזות ותפילין שהיו כשרים, אבל בנדו"ד הבדיקה היא בכלל האם המזוזות הם כשירות, האם יש משהו בכלל בתוך ה"נרתיק", האם פרשיות ק"ש מודפסות על נייר, והאם מה שכתוב הוא פרשיות ק"ש או "ברכת כהנים"..., והרי אפי' ספק בזה הוא ספק מה"ת, ועאכו"כ שיודעים בבירור שמוכרים, באה"ק ובחו"ל, מזוזות מזוייפות! ועד"ז בנוגע תפילין. ואפי' בנוגע מזוזות ותפילין כשרים מובא ב"מטה אפרים" שמנהג טוב לבדקן בחודש אלול בכל שנה ושנה! ועוד.

Lately we’ve discussed that as part of the Mezuzah campaign, an effort should be made to check mezuzos and tefillin. Some people challenged this based on the Gemara and Halacha that a mezuzah belonging to an individual needs to be checked only twice in seven years, and tefillin don’t need to be checked at all! But that question misunderstands that the Gemara talks about checking mezuzos and tefillin that were kosher, but here we’re talking about checking to see whether there was ever a kosher mezuzah to begin with, whether the case has a scroll inside it, and if there’s a scroll whether it’s handwritten or printed on paper, and if it’s handwritten whether it contains the correct passages from the Shema, or, as happened in instance, the passage of Birchas Kohanim… If there’s even a doubt about this, it’s a doubt concerning a Biblical obligation, and all the more so when we know that there are people selling fake mezuzos, in Eretz Yisrael as well as in the diaspora, and the same applies to tefillin. And moreover, even regarding kosher mezuzos and tefillin, the Mateh Efraim cites the custom of checking them every year in the month of Elul etc.
