Back To The Blockbuster is celebrating its first anniversary pick that was chosen by our listeners and it was their decision for us to look back at Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl on its 20th anniversary! Directed by Gore Verbinski, the film stars Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley, and it’s based on the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at Disney theme parks. The film follows pirate Captain Jack Sparrow and blacksmith Will Turner as they rescue kidnapped Elizabeth Swann from the crew of the Black Pearl, captained by Hector Barbossa. Barbossa’s crew attempts to retrieve the final pieces of a hoard of Aztec gold to break the curse laid on them when they stole it. The pair looks back on how the industry thought the film was destined to flop since swashbuckling pirate films weren’t huge at the box office and it didn’t feature big stars. The duo also looks into how the film changed the trajectory of Johnny Depp’s career, turning him from cult movie actor to mainstream movie star, the film’s eventual huge box office success, and its legacy as it stands today.
