My husband, Bill Bachrach, has an expression, “It’s okay to have a thought you don’t express.” This can be very useful at times. I also believe it is okay to have thoughts you do express. Many times, we are thinking about something and we don’t say what is on our mind, and we should so we and everyone involved knows the truth about the situation. We might be afraid to say what we are thinking for some unknown reason. You are just guessing about what is really going on in someone else’s mind without really knowing the truth. When someone is telling me that a certain situation occurred with a client and they don’t know why or understand, I ask them if they asked the person or people involved about it instead of just thinking about asking them. Most times we role play how that would work and they then go back and talk to the person. It is really about the client or prospect and you wanting to do what’s best for them – so why not ask and tell the truth about how you are feeling so everyone is on the same page?
So, the point is - stop being afraid of what might happen because what you think might happen might not actually happen. And how bad could it really be? What are you really afraid of? Chances are you will realize that would you’re imagining is not only improbable, and not all that bad anyway. Tell the truth and let things go the way they will go. The truth isn’t always easy, but the truth is almost always better for everyone involved.
