Description

Romans 9:14-18 ‘Is God Fair?’

When was the last time you went through a difficult situation and may have questioned God’s love? After reading this passage of Romans, do you think God’s love for you was ever in jeopardy? When similar hard times arise in the future, what might you do differently?

Paul has been writing about God’s sovereignty over death (Romans 5), over sin (Romans 6–7), and over struggles, persecution, and hardship (Romans 8). In this section, he turns his attention to God’s sovereignty in regard to salvation. The Jews had always felt they were God’s chosen people. Now that the church was growing into an institution, people were asking how God could be faithful to His promises if the majority of His chosen people—the Jews—were failing to respond to the gospel. Paul answers that question here by using familiar stories to remind them of God’s sovereign choices throughout their history.
