Supernatural: It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester (4x07) | Recap & Lore

Season 4 Episode 7 Published 3 years, 3 months ago
Description

Supernatural Season 4, Episode 7, It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester recap 🎃 It's the Supernatural Halloween episode: hex bags, razor-blade candy, bobbing for apples gone very wrong, and a witch trying to raise the demon Samhain on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. Plus,  a starstruck Sam meets Castiel for the first time. Yes, the title is a nod to It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (LA rolled her eyes).

The episode opens on Halloween night with a dad sneaking a piece of his kid's candy... and spitting up razor blades. (The old urban legend come to life!) Then a costume party bobbing-for-apples contest turns deadly, the boys find hex bags, and it becomes clear a witch is working through a 600-year-old ritual to raise Samhain, and they only have until midnight. To make things worse, the angels show up, and they have their own plan for this town.

Episode Highlights:

  • The cheerleader who got the apple on her first try without getting her hair wet (the least believable thing in the episode)
  • Ashley Benson (Pretty Little Liars) at the costume party
  • Dean investigating the cheerleaders, and Sam calling him on it
  • SAM MEETS CAS. Jared's excited little face. We sat up straight.
  • Uriel (Robert Wisdom) calling humans mud monkeys and plumbing on two legs, and wanting to smite everybody (total shit-starter)
  • A mausoleum full of zombies and ghosts, and our 17th blood splooge of the series
  • Sam's nosebleed, and the choice he makes
  • Uriel being a total shit-starter
  • Dean and Cas on the park bench, with a warning about what's coming

In the lore segment, we dig into Uriel, whose name means God is my light: the angel who guards the gate of Eden with a fiery sword, and why the Church only officially recognizes three archangels. Then we cover the origins of Halloween, from the Celtic Druids' festival of Samhain to All Hallows' Eve, and why we hand candy to children to make them go away.

"Zombie ghost orgy. Well, that's it. I'm torching everybody." – Dean Winchester
