Episode Details

Supernatural Season 4, Episode 4, Metamorphosis recap 🍖 Dean catches Sam using his demon powers with Ruby, the brothers go at it, and the boys hunt a rougarou, a hungry Cajun legend, before the man inside it changes forever, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

The episode opens with Dean finding out what Sam's been doing behind his back: exorcising demons with his mind, with Ruby cheering him on. Cue a brawl, a big fight, and Sam's hideous shirt. Then an old hunter friend, Travis (Glenn Morshower), calls about a case: Jack Montgomery (Ryan Robbins), a sweet, newly married guy who's suddenly eating raw meat by the fistful. Jack's turning into a rougarou, and once he tastes human flesh, there's no going back.

Episode Highlights:

• Kim Manners' final episode as director, and those gorgeous reflection shots (watch for our Kim Manners spotlight at the end of the season)
• Sam's hideous shirt, back for another round
• Jack chowing down on raw meat with that weird spine
• Travis, the old-school hunter with his word of the day: metamorphosis
• Jack's very uncomfortable bar scene
• Dean and Sam's big fight about Sam being a freak
• Jack's beautifully landscaped backyard (we were jealous)
• The real-life Jensen panel story about Jared eating raw ribs (rougarou, is that you?)

In the lore segment, we dig into the rougarou, the werewolf-like creature of Cajun Louisiana folklore whose name comes from the French loup-garou. We cover the legend that Catholics who break Lent seven years in a row become one, how 13 small objects by your door will keep one busy counting until sunrise, the annual rougarou festival, and the swampy rougarou statue at New Orleans' Audubon Zoo.

"Sam loves research. He keeps it under his mattress with his KY." – Dean Winchester

Your turn, hunters: Should Sam keep using his powers? And would YOU break Lent if it meant risking becoming a rougarou? Tell us in the Spotify comments, leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (it's how new hunters find us), or send us fan mail. Bonus points for fandom fun facts we missed.
