Supernatural: Are You There, God? It's Me, Dean Winchester (4x02) | Recap & Lore

Season 4 Episode 2 Published 3 years, 3 months ago
Description

Supernatural Season 4, Episode 2, Are You There, God? It's Me, Dean Winchester recap 😇 The ghosts of everyone the Winchesters couldn't save come back for revenge, Bobby's legendary panic room makes its debut, and the Apocalypse officially enters the chat on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. Our suggested alternate title: Where's the Pie?

The episode opens with Bobby's hunter friend Olivia getting brutally taken out by ghosts, and her wide-open chest cavity is easily the goriest thing we've seen in a while. Kudos, makeup department. Soon the boys and Bobby realize they're being haunted too. It's the Rising of the Witnesses, and the spirits of people they failed to save want payback: Agent Henriksen, Meg Masters (who is NOT happy about the demon's wardrobe choices), and, heartbreakingly, Ronald from Nightshifter. Plus two very creepy twin girls from Bobby's mysterious past. (Eric Kripke really loves creepy kids.)

Episode Highlights:

  • Dean refusing to be singled out by God (he doesn't even like being singled out at birthday parties)
  • The debut of Bobby's iron-lined, devil's-trapped panic room, complete with arsenal
  • Our desperate need for fan art of Bobby's apparently fabulous house (send it to us!)
  • Sam and Ruby's shady secrets getting shadier
  • Bobby finishing the ritual while a ghost literally tries to rip his heart out (badass)
  • THE KITCHEN SCENE: Castiel putting Dean in his place, six inches from his face, with eye contact that had us rewinding
  • Castiel explaining the 66 seals, Lilith, and the first mention of LUCIFER
  • Sam's Zoolander-meets-Jim-Carrey hair fluff (LA made us pause so she could reenact it)

In the lore segment, we dig into the seven seals from the Book of Revelation, the biblical Apocalypse that inspired Supernatural's 66 seals, including the Four Horsemen, the cries of the martyrs, and the seven angelic trumpets. Plus, LA connects it all to M. Night Shyamalan's Knock at the Cabin.

"I thought angels were supposed to be guardians. Fluffy wings, halos, you know, Michael Landon. Not dicks." – Dean Winchester

Your turn, hunters: Which witness would haunt YOU the most? Was the kitchen scene as charged for you as it was for us? And who else wants a panic room? Tell us in the Spotify comments, leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (it's how new hunters find us), or send us fan mail. Bonus points for fandom fun facts we missed.
