Immediately after the Vicksburg siege ended, Grant was concerned that Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston, who was in nearby Jackson, was going to attack and attempt to retake Vicksburg. Grant ordered Major General William T. Sherman to stop this which led to another siege, this time at Jackson.
