John and Lucy Ferrier settle into their Mormon life, seemingly happy, but with the subtle threat looming that it could all be taken away if the Ferriers leave their new faith. Lucy grows into a young woman, and falls in love with the handsome Jefferson Hope, promising to run away together in a few short weeks. It seems too good to be true, and, of course, we know from Dr. Watson's recollections that it is.
